Wayne Donald Shannon was born on December 16, 1950, in Cabri, Saskatchewan, to Donald Oscar and Mary Francis Shannon. He was raised in Hazlet, Saskatchewan, alongside his five sisters—Marilyn, Lynn, Donna, Cindy, and Jody—where he learned the values of hard work, resilience, and the importance of family.
In his early years, Wayne faced a significant health challenge, spending time at the Fort San Sanatorium near Fort Qu’Appelle while battling tuberculosis. This experience shaped his quiet strength and perseverance, qualities that stayed with him throughout his life.
Wayne spent his life farming on the family homestead east of Hazlet. He began his career along side his dad raising pigs, later transitioning to cattle, and grain farming. His dedication to the land reflected his steady nature and deep-rooted connection to his home and community.
He was a faithful and enthusiastic spectator of the Hazlet Elks baseball team, rarely missing an opportunity to support and enjoy the game. In his younger years, Wayne was known as something of a “forever bachelor,” until he met Heather Violet Gilchrist.
Wayne and Heather were married November 14, 1992, and raised their son Travis, until his graduation in 1998. Wayne took great pride in his family, and his greatest joy in life was the love he shared with them.
Wayne and Heather enjoyed spending time with family and friends while camping, fishing, and playing cards. When they retired from the farm, they joined the snow bird club wintering in Arizona, and summering at Chitek Lake. Family gatherings will not be the same without Wayne.
Wayne will be remembered for his quiet strength, strong work ethic, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. Whether working in the fields, or spending time with family, he was a constant and dependable presence.
He was predeceased by his parents, Donald Oscar and Mary Francis Shannon; his niece Shannon Leila Quintin; and in-law’s Tom and Vi Gilchrist. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Heather Shannon; his step son Travis (Selina, Sammy – grandchildren); his sisters: Marilyn (Don), Lynn (Lawrence), Donna (Dale), Cindy (Ian), and Jody (Jody). He will also be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews: Bonnie, Brad, Donnie, Angela, Shawn, Tara-Lynn, Raylene, Amber, Tyler, Trent, Jerrid, Jayden, and Jayce; brothers and sisters-in-law and their families.
As a late comer to the saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, he now rests in the arms of Jesus, his Lord and Savior, as he waits for the rest of his family to join him.
