Wally Derkach Obituary

Volodimer “Wally” Bill Derkach passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, kindness, and quiet strength.  Though his legal name was Volodimer, he was known to all who loved him simply as Wally.

Wally was born and raised on a homestead near Sheho, Saskatchewan, where he developed the strong work eithic and grounded values that would guide him throughout his life.  He pursued his passion for education at the University of Saskatchewan earning both his Bachelor of Education, and later a Master of Education.

Wally’s teaching career began in a one-room schoolhouse in Warend, Saskatchewan, where he laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to education.  He later taught in Sandy Bay, Saskatchewan, where his two children, Tracey and Trevor, began their lives.  Continuing his career, Wally taught high school in Saskatoon before moving to Regina to work with the Department of Education, where he transitioned into educational administration.

Wally went on to serve as Assistant Superintendent in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and later as Assistant Director of Education in Nipawin, Saskatchewan.  Throughout his career, he was deeply respected for his leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to students, teachers, and the advancement of education.  He retired in Nipawin, leaving behind a lasting impact on the communities and colleagues he served.

In his retirement years, Wally reconnected with Shirley, whom he had known though the Saskatchewan Superannuated Teachers Association.  They were married on September 2, 2016, and together built a life filled with companionship, laughter, and love.  Shirley was truly the love of his life.

Wally and Shirley made their home in Swift Current, where they enjoyed traveling together, competing in cribbage tournaments across Saskatchewan, gardening, and simply spending time side by side.  Wally also cherished his time fishing, especially at Tobin Lake, often alongside his dear friend Bernie.

Wally will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was a man who valued family above all else, took pride in his work, and found joy in the simple moments of life.  His steady presence, wisdom, and warmth will be deeply missed.

Wally was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Tracey Wynne Derkach, and was also predeceased by his brother Greg Derkach, and his sisters Irene and Pearl, all of whom he missed dearly.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley Dyck; his son, Trevor Derkach (Adele); his sister, Doris Onishko; his grandson, Cody Derkach (Shalene); his granddaughter, Brittany Cramer (Zach); and his great-grandchildren, Lily Derkach, Aubrey Derkach, and Beckham Cramer.

Wally will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends, and his memory will live on in the many lives he touched.

The interment service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1502 – 2nd St N, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
