Sonja Fortney Obituary

FORTNEY: Sonja Isabella passed away on May 2, 2022 at the Meadows at the age of 88. The Funeral Service was held on Monday, May 9, 2022 from Christ The Redeemer Roman Catholic Church with Father Chris Juchacz officiating. Sonja is survived by her sisters Lil Osberg and Elizabeth Menard; her children Stephen (Jo-Ann) Fortney, Anthony Fortney, Grace Hillier, Scott Fortney and Melanie Leavitt; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. She is predeceased by her parents John and Frida Johnson; son John; sister Elsie Bouchard; brother Bertle Johnson; great grandson Riley Leavitt; and grandson Warren Hillier. Sonja was born in Shaunavon on September 30, 1933. She attended school in Shaunavon and at the Moose Jaw Teachers College. She married Jerry Fortney on December 27, 1954. She taught for several years until they took over the farm in 1961. She stopped teaching to help on the farm and raise five children. She was an active member of the Saint Mary's C.W.L., helping to write the history. She was the chief editor of the Simmie Saga history book and contributed to the Scotsguard history book. Sonja was an active member of the MS Society and a big fundraiser for the MS Walk. She was a resident of the Council of Palliser and a volunteer call taker for the Southwest Crisis Services. Sonja was an active member of the International Parents Plan, fostering 3 children. She loved curling prior to getting MS. She loved gladiolas and grew them in the  garden at the Meadows. She started collecting "unique" earrings and soon had a collection of over 200. Sonja was named a member of the Council of the Sick by the Diocese of Gravelbourg in 1977. She was an advocate for the workers at the Palliser Care Centre and wrote many letters to the editor on their behalf. She partook in their strike which got her a stern talking to.
