Shirley "Slim" Thomas Obituary

THOMAS: Shirley "Slim" age 100 years of Swift Current, SK passed away peacefully at The Meadows in Swift Current. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2021 from Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Veteran's Section with Elaine Little officiating. The urn bearers were Michael Blake and Jaslynn Cowley and we were thankful to be joined by the Royal Canadian Legion Swift Current Branch #56 Honor Guard. Slim is survived by his daughter Elaine Blake, son-in-law Dale Blake; grandson Michael Blake; great granddaughter Jaslynn Cowley; sister-in-law Ruth Thomas; special friend Joan Williamson; and many nieces, nephews and Friends. He is predeceased by his wife Isabelle Thomas; brother Jim Thomas, and his parents. Slim was born in Brandon, MB on June 10, 1921. He attended school in Sturgis, SK and worked in Regina, SK where he met Isabelle Hill and they were married in December 1949. Slim worked for Motorways Transport and he later moved to Swift Current to manage the Motorways terminal where he remained until his retirement. Slim was very active in the community in the following ways: The Royal Canadian Legion Lounge Manager, Social Chairman, organized Tuesday dinners, organized D-Day celebrations, November 11th activities, The Legionaire hockey team banquet, New Years dance and Branch Fowl Suppers. He also took time to help with the Salvation Army  Christmas Kettles, poppy sales, Legion Bingo, Branch Convenor for the Paraplegic Provincial Car Raffle. Slim served eight years on the Board of the Swift Current Chamber of Commerce, two of these as President and one year as Director of the Saskatchewan Provincial Chamber. He was a long time member of the Elk's Club, serving in every chair including Exalted Ruler and District Deputy, instrumental in organizing three Provincial Elk's Convention's and was awarded with a Lifetime membership in the Elk's Organization. He was an active member in the Swift Current Lions Club serving as Past President, District Govenor, and because of these qualities Slim received a Lifetime Membership in the belief that he represented what a Legion Membership should be, in service to his fellow comrades and to his community. Slim also served as President of the Swift Current Indians Hockey Club, the Indians Baseball Team and was a devoted fan of baseball and Bronco's hockey. His love of golf saw him a very active member of the Elmwood Golf Club as Club Captain and player and received a Lifetime membership at Elmwood. Slim was always a caring and loving individual who unselfishly gave himself over and over again and will sadly be missed by his family and all who had the good fortune to have met him.
