With deep sadness, the family of Ron Toles announces his passing on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ron faced every challenge in life with humour, resilience, and a steadfast belief in the worth of every person he met.
Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on August 21,1948, Ron was the third son of Ken and Hazel Toles and grew up alongside his brothers John and Fred. He carried a lifelong affection for his Prairie roots and the communities that shaped him.
Ron received his early education at Empire Elementary School and Riverview Collegiate before attending the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus, where he earned his Bachelor of Education in History and Psychology. He later completed a Post‑Graduate Diploma in Educational Psychology from the University of Regina, a testament to his commitment to lifelong learning.
While still in high school, Ron met the love of his life, Carole Van Nostrand, who boldly asked him to their first date. They married on August 2, 1969, beginning a partnership filled with devotion, laughter, and shared purpose. Shortly after marrying, Ron and Carole moved to Swift Current, where they built a home, a family, and a life rich with friendships and community involvement. Their greatest joys were their sons, Greg and Dean.
Ron’s teaching career spanned three decades in the Swift Current area, including Fairview, W.A. Beatty, O.M. Irwin, Swift Current Comprehensive High School, and Maverick High School. He later worked in counselling and adult education roles with the Eastend School Division, CAMPS School, SIAST/Great Plains College, and the University of Regina. Ron believed deeply in the potential of every student, and his humour, compassion, and encouragement left a lasting impact on countless young people.
In addition to his work in education, Ron served the City of Swift Current as a member of City Council from 2012 to 2020. He was proud to advocate for positive change, particularly for residents of Prairie Pioneer Independent Housing, and through his work with the regional library board.
Ron’s interests were as wide‑ranging as his friendships. He loved golf and curling, especially with family and long‑time teammates. He was an accomplished bridge player, earning Life Master status and was very proud to have finished first in the province in 2025. Ron also cherished his years at Camp Shagabec, where he served as counsellor and co‑director, and later watched his children and granddaughter enjoy the same camp traditions.
A man of deep gratitude, Ron celebrated 46 years of sobriety and was profoundly thankful for the fellowship that supported him throughout that journey. His church family at First United Church was another cornerstone of his life, offering friendship, spiritual grounding, and comfort through both joyful and difficult times.
Ron will be remembered for his quick wit, his generous spirit, and his unwavering belief that every person has value. His legacy lives on in the students he inspired, the community he served, and the family he loved beyond measure.
Ron is survived by Carole, his beloved wife of 56 years along with their children, sons Greg (Christa) and Dean (Carisma), his grandchildren Callie, Zach, Peyton and Ella, his brother John (Joyanne), sister-in-law Myrna, and his cherished extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Ken and Hazel, Carole’s parents Neil and Sylvia, his brother Fred, and his granddaughter Aubrey.
Carole, Greg, Dean, and their families wish to extend their deepest gratitude to everyone who played a role in the compassionate and exceptional care Ron received while he was at the Cypress Regional Hospital.
In Ron’s words – always remember … Take Care, Stay Safe, Have Fun.
