Ronald D. O’Brien
1934 - 2026
Ronald O’Brien of Swift Current, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026 at the age of 91.
Ron was born on October 29, 1934 to Ruby and Patrick O’Brien in Biggar, Saskatchewan. Ron met Betty, the love of his life, while they were attending high school together in Biggar, SK. They formed their partnership in both marriage and business, with a variety of business ventures ranging from service stations to vehicle and farm implement dealerships.
In 1969, they sold everything in Biggar and took their young family to northern Saskatchewan so that Ron could pursue his passion as a commercial bush pilot. Over the next 23 years Ron flew commercially throughout northern Saskatchewan and the Arctic and in later years with the Saskatchewan Government flying Executive Air, Air Ambulance and Fire Fighting.
In retirement Ron and Betty went for a drive and found the lovely community of Ponteix, SK. It was the perfect home base for them to enjoy winters in Arizona and summers at their cabin at Nemeiben Lake. In 2014, they moved to their beloved condo at Prairie Pioneer Manor in Swift Current where Ron lived independently until a few weeks before his passing.
Ron will be dearly missed by his two children, Patrick O’Brien (Anne) and Colleen Roberts (Bob) and their families. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty, in 2023.
Ron’s funeral was held on January 31, 2026 at Christ the Redeemer Church with Father Ferdinand Officiating and Deacon David Hagel providing beautiful music. Pat and Colleen would like to thank all those who attended in person and online. For those wishing, the funeral mass can be viewed on YouTube (search for CTR Parish Swift Current).
We also want to acknowledge Ron’s physician, Dr. de Klerk who was greatly involved in his care for many years.
