Rick Nicholson Obituary

Richard “Rick” Nicholson passed away on February 7, 2024, at the age of 71, after a long battle with cancer.

Rick was born on July 16, 1952 in Powell River, B.C.  He joined the RCMP in 1978 and was stationed in Ile-a-la-Crosse.  It was here that he met and married Susan Taylor who was working as a nurse in the community.

Rick served with the RCMP in Ile-a-la-Crosse, Eastend, Rosetown, Saskatoon, Shaunavon and Swift Current before retiring in 2009.  Rick kept busy during retirement by golfing, travelling and taking on various part-time jobs, including the Shaunavon Golf Course, Coroner and Shaunavon bylaw officer.  He was also an active volunteer throughout his life, coaching high school football in both Rosetown and Shaunavon and supporting community services such as local golf course boards, the Shaunavon Courtesy Van and KidSport.  Rick’s community involvement even led to him being recognized as an SHS Athletic Wall of Fame Inductee.

Rick was affectionally referred to as “Bumpa” by his 7 grandchildren and was always supportive of their activities.  He was also known to be an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and a regular patron of the local golf courses.

Rick is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan Nicholson; children: Michael (Sarah) Nicholson of Swift Current, SK, Jennifer (Garett) Kupczynski of Swift Current, SK and Megan Nicholson (Troy Potts) of Lethbridge, AB; grandchildren: Sophie, Emmy, Clara, Maizie, Carrington, Tate and Briar; sisters: Bobbie, Ruth and Mardell Nicholson; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law and their families.  Rick was pre-deceased by his parents, Sally and Joseph Nicholson; his beloved sister Dee Cote; brother-in-law Marcel Cote; nephew Russell Hudson; sister-in-law Marjorie Taylor.
