The family of Myra Fredella Smith of St. Albert, Alberta, is saddened to announce her passing on April 19, 2026, at the age of 85 years. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. William Smith; son Matthew Smith (Donna Lawrence), and grandson Michael Smith of Westlock, Alberta.
Myra, the only child of Fred and Esther Lewis, was born June 24, 1940, in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. She grew up in Verlo, Saskatchewan, and attended school there. She had many fond memories of her childhood in that small prairie town, with her grandparents, the Currie cousins, and other extended family and friends, and of living above her father’s general store. After graduating from Cabri High School, Myra attended Ryerson Polytechnic Institute (University) in Toronto and achieved a degree in Radio and Television Arts in 1961.
Myra returned to Swift Current and as jobs in radio and TV were limited at the time, she started work as a secretary for South Saskatchewan Pipeline. Myra thoroughly enjoyed her work and the many people she worked with over the years. She worked there until her retirement in 1992. Myra then worked in her husband’s chiropractic clinic for a number of years.
Myra loved travelling, having new experiences and meeting new people. As a family, they took many trips together all over Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean. On a number of occasions, they travelled with Myra’s parents to England, Hawaii, Florida, Mexico, Jamaica, Aruba, and Australia, to name a few.
When Bill retired in 2005, their travelling adventures expanded to include three European River Cruises, one Russian River Cruise, and a cruise to the Galapagos Islands. Many other trips with a small group went to Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and Africa. Africa was Myra’s favourite trip because it included a three-week safari. She didn’t even mind it when a hyena ate her breakfast one morning! The last major trip Myra and Bill enjoyed was a four-month cruise around the world in 2016. They were booked on a second world cruise, but the Covid virus hit, so it was cancelled.
In 2020, Mrya’s failing health and desire to spend more time with her son and his family necessitated their move to St. Albert. Although Myra left Swift Current, her home of almost 80 years, she had no regrets, as she got to experience her grandson Michael’s last few years of high school and support his love of competitive mogul skiing before he was off to university last fall.
Myra was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Esther Lewis, in-laws Corny and Betty Smith, sister-in-law Carol Ann Hansen, and brother-in-law Dr. Dave Will.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. from the Chapel of Warren’s Funeral Home. In memory of Myra, memorial donations may be made to the Swift Current S.P.C.A.
