Mary Cates

Mary Elizabeth Cates, 92, passed away peacefully at Willow Creek Manor in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on February 2, 2024.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.  Mary was born on August 6, 1931 in Cabri, Saskatchewan to James and Helen Garrett.

She was raised at the family farm at Pennant and attended Pennant school.  She worked at several jobs in the area, nurse’s aide, clerk, etc.  She married Lyle Cates in 1952 and moved to the Cates farm in the White Bear area where they farmed and raised 3 children: Lois, Glenn, and Oran.  Mary enjoyed gardening, reading, and knitting.

Mary is survived by her children: Lois (Leonard) Howes, Glenn (Sylvia) Cates, and Oran Cates; her grandchildren: Jay Cates, Bill (Allison) Cates, Witt (Jackie) Howes, Colby and Caitlin Cates; and great-grandchildren: Wyler, Cecilia, Autumn, and Lillian; and her sister Margaret.

She was predeceased by her parents James and Helen; her husband Lyle; and brother’s James Ronald and Wesley; sister’s Vivian and Joyce.

At Mary’s request no funeral service will be held.

The family would like to thank the staff at Willow Creek Manor for the compassionate care they gave to Mary for the duration of her stay.
