Leonard Stein Obituary

Leonard (“Len”) Stein, age 87, of Swift Current, SK, passed away June 22, 2024 at The Meadows in Swift Current with his wife and seven children by his side.  Len was a husband, Dad, Papa, Great Papa, friend, mentor and so much more. 

He was born in Swift Current on October 30, 1936.  From a young age, Len was a dreamer and a doer.  He started his career at age 15 delivering telegrams for the CPR Telegraph Office and then worked several years in the office as a bookkeeper/secretary.  Following that, he joined Flint Rig Co. where he worked his way up to manager.  Len met his wife, Evelyn (“Ev”) Geck, during this time. Len and Ev were married in 1957 and raised 7 children.  He had visions for his world and drove himself to achieve. He started his business, Sage Oilfield Services, in 1962 with 4 young children at home.  Len cared deeply about his community.  He served the City of Swift Current on Council for 22 years, 12 of those as Mayor.  Len is one of the longest serving mayors for the City.  Len was a formidable advocate for the oil and gas industry in Western Canada.  In 2008, he was awarded an honourary membership in the CAODC, the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, for outstanding service to the contracting industry in Canada. 

Len is survived by his wife Ev; his children: Landen (Barbara) Stein, Laurel Stein (Dwight Willett), A.J. (Carolyn) Stein, Alison (Kerry) Braaten, Cheryl (Tony)  Pavlovic, Monica Stein (Laura Cammidge), Nola Stein (Peter Christensen); his grandchildren and their families: Jennifer Mitchell – Carter, Alexander, Callie; Jared (Marina) Stein – Victoria, Violet; Jasen Stein; Julia (Kyle) Bly – Felix; Jade (Evan) Sieben; Denae (Colby) Elford – Emmett, John; Kamara Willett (Michael Bell) – Birdie; Kristin (Simon) Godin – Joelle, Caleb, Jonah; Kadie (John) Wozniak – Nora, Julie, Ruby; Jameson Braaten; Jessica Stein; Joshua Stein; Logan Stein; Tonielle Pavlovic (Carter James) – Madison, Wilson; Shelby  Pavlovic – Kage; Tomas Pavlovic; Sheldon Pavlovic (Hayley Schmaltz); Jesse-Leigh Logan; Wyatt Logan; Cole Logan; Dylan Christensen; his nephew Gregory Nagel and his children, Myles and Taralyn; numerous cousins and their families; and Ev’s siblings: Myrle Blosser, Joan Hartzell, Allan (Lorraine) Geck and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Len was predeceased by his parents, Albert & Irene Stein; his sister and her husband, Phyllis and Heinz Nagel, and their daughter, Margaret (“Peggy”) Nagel; his brother, Wayne Stein; and Ev’s brothers, Donald, Bennett and Russell Geck, and her sister, May Haga.

Len lived his entire life in Swift Current.  For the last 11 years of his life he was cared for, loved and supported by his Meadows’ family.  The Stein family will be forever indebted to Len’s special caregivers.  The Funeral Mass for Len will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ The Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Swift Current with Rev. Father Lourdhu Bandhanadam officiating.  The Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. at Christ The Redeemer Roman Catholic Church.  A private family interment for Len will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Swift Current.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to STARS (www.stars.ca), The Meadows Auxiliary (meadowsauxiliary@sasktel.net) or a charity of your choice.  Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.  For further information call 306-773-8831 or 1-800-267-6606, or visit our website at www.warrensfuneralhome.com and express your sympathy on the family tribute wall.
