Leonard Head Obituary

Head, Leonard Thomas was born June 4, 1936 in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, the youngest of six children of Richard and Alice Head.  He sadly passed away October 2, 2021 at The Meadows, House 15, Swift Current, Saskatchewan.  Dad enjoyed his childhood growing up on the family farm in the Antelope district.  It was here that he found his love of nature, from plants to animals.  Over the years he helped on the farm and in the huge family garden, which transitioned later in his adult life to a large garden behind Grandma and Grandpa Carruthers house, then to his own natural garden at our family home on Allen Drive.  He even maintained a micro-garden at his home in the Pioneer Independent Housing.  While on the farm, Dad had many animals as pets; from numerous cats, to his dogs Laddie, Trixie, and Snoopy, and even calves.  He and Auntie Doris were inseparable growing up as they were closest in age.  Dad attended Stone Cliff School until grade nine when the school was shut down due to a lack of students.  He diligently completed his schooling through correspondence.  He then went on to the University of Saskatchewan Agricultural program, but was unable to finish his degree.  His aspirations to be a farmer were not to be, since he was the youngest, the land had been passed to this eldest brother.  This did not set him back as he made the decision to go to Swift Current to cash in on the oil boom.  There Dad met the love of his life, Shirley Carruthers, and on November 20, 1959 the two were married.  Their union was blessed with five daughters.  As a family we went on camping trips, Sunday visits at Auntie Doris and Uncle Martin's farm, and on payday, a special meal out.  Dad had many different careers throughout his lifetime, which he took pride in doing, but he was most proud of being the owner of two ice cream shops:  S & L Dairy Bar, and S & L Dairy Maid.  Over the years Dad had many interests, hobbies, and volunteering experiences.  He collected coins, gardened, took cooking classes, baked bread and buns, bird watching, trains (real and model); and travelled.  He took trips coast-to-coast across the country by train, excursions across the border to Deadwood, South Dakota, and Sleeping Buffalo, Montana; camping: just into British Columbia, all over Alberta, and Saskatchewan, but his favorite spot was at Cypress Hills.  He was a member of the Frontiersmen, Boy Scouts, and the St. John's Ambulance Brigade, with whom he would volunteer his services at Bronco Hockey games, Frontier Days, and training of other personnel.  He was also found volunteering at Doc's Town, be it through baking bread in the old clay oven or giving tours in the elevator.  With mom's early passing, Dad found alternative ways to spend his retirement.  He enjoyed coffee row with his friends or complete strangers, day trips around the South West, jaunts to the Sather's farm, a few family vacations with his daughters and their families to the East and West coasts of Canada, and his favorite place Cypress; plus devoutly walking the mall.  Sadly, during the last few years of his life Dementia slowly stole his memories from him.  He was fortunate that the staff and residents in House 15 became an extended family to him, where he was well cared for and safe.  Leonard is survived by his daughters, son-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren:  Kathy (Ken) Cahill, Saskatoon, SK; Shiela (Greg) Epp, Saskatoon, SK, and their family:  Matt Pavlis (Kelly Clark), his daughter Emily, Victoria, BC; Stephen Epp (Cassidy Bastian), Michael Epp, Jennifer Epp, all of Saskatoon, SK; Lenora (George) Wheeler, Slave Lake, AB, and their family: Stewart (Erin) Head, their son Anthony, New Westminster, BC, Aurora Wheeler, Devon, AB, her daughter Alexis, Slave Lake, AB, Brett Jones, Edson, AB; Heather (Perry) Fisher, Swift Current, SK, and their family: Curtis (Tracy) Fisher, their children Diesel and Emersyn, Swift Current, SK, Carol Fisher (Chun Liang Gong), Wuxi, China; Helen Head, Regina, SK, her children: Mitchell Head-Theise (Victoria Palmer), Tariq Head-Sabtiu, both of Regina, SK.  He is also survived by his sister-in-laws: Donna Ramsey, Nanaimo, BC, Teresa (Mark) VanderVlekkert, Grimshaw, AB, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Leonard was predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years, Shirley Head; his parents Richard and Alice Head; his in-laws Edward and Helen Carruthers; also by his siblings and their spouses:  Ernest (Marjorie) Head; Phyllis (Don) Holtby; Mildred (Aronold) Fritsch; Jack Head; Doris (Martin) Sather; in-laws: Maxine (Dave) Reeves; Lil (Tom) Thomson; Don Ramsey; Ruby (Pete) Wiebe; Nephews: Richard (Dick) Holtby; Tobe Sather; Tommy Thomson.  Leonard will be laid to rest at St. John's Cemetery at Antelope.  In the summer of 2022 a casual coffee celebration will be held to honour Dad.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad's memory may be directed to: Dr. Noble Irwin Healthcare Foundation, The Meadows Auxiliary, or the SPCA.  Arrangements entrusted to Warren's Funeral Home.  For further information please call 1-306-773-8831 or 1-800-267-6606, or visit our website at www.warrensfuneralhome.com and express your sympathy to family members on the tribute wall.
