Katherine Blydo

Blydo, Katherine(Kay) 81 of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2019, at Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., May 3, 2019 at First United Church, with Minister Annette Taylor officiating. The pianist was Joan Williamson and the Eulogist was Jane Johnston. Ushers were Glenn Hanke, John Leyshon, Wally Pearson, Allan Smith. Pallbearers were Scott Blydo, Derek and Mitchell Thomas, MacKenzie Johnston, Parker Wiebe, and Michael Blydo. Interment services were held at Hillcrest Cemetery. Kay is survived by her husband, dear friend and companion of 61 years, Bill Blydo. She was the loving mother of Carolyn Thomas (James Thomas), Les Blydo (Ramona Orr), Norma Johnston (Stan Johnston), Heather Wiebe (Randy Wiebe), Rob Blydo, Vance Blydo (Sandy Blydo), and Scott Blydo. She is the proud grandmother of Derek and Mitchell Thomas, Jane and MacKenzie Johnston, Parker and Jenna Wiebe, Dariyn and Shaye Blydo, India, Michael, and Sydney Blydo, and Madelyn Blydo: Kay's siblings: Olga Homeniuk, Alice Diak, Carl Lulchenko, and Darleene Kryski; and, Bill siblings, John Blydo. Kay was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Laura Lulchenko, her siblings Sophie Gurski and Mary Wood and Bill's sister Mary Derkatch. Kay was born at the family farm near Kamsack, Saskatchewan on February 27, 1938. She attended school in Kamsack at Kamsack High School and remained a life long learner. On June 20, 1958 she married Bill Blydo, in Kamsack Saskatchewan after a two year courtship. Kay worked at Swift Current Union Hospital until retirement and volunteered at the Women's Safe Shelter, Victim Services and Mental Health. She was active with Daughters of the Nile, the New Democratic Party(NDP), Council of First United Church, Legion Ladies, Eastern Star, Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT), Good Time Dance Club and fund raised for the Kidney Foundation. She also was a figure skating judge. Kay supported and encouraged her children to be involved in hockey, figure skating, speed swimming and synchronize swimming and other activities. She was also an ardent supporter of her many grand children. Some of Kay's hobbies included gardening, sewing, knitting, quilting, baking and canning. Since her retirement another of her passions was selling raffle tickets to fund raise for the Daughters of the Nile in support of the Shriners Hospital for Children. She earned the honourable distinction of "The Ticket Lady" at Pharmasave and the local Farmer's Market where she did this work.
Throughout her life, Kay's community mindedness aligned her with individuals, families and charities. Through her actions, love and support she was able to help numerous families in the community.
Kay will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her husband, children, grand children family and friends. In her memory, donations may be made to the Daughters of the Nile in support of the Shriners Hospital for Children: 5225 101 St NW, Calgary, AB T3L 1S4.
