Mom was born and raised on the Olson family farm west of Wymark, on June 13, 1925. She was the second youngest of a family of 16 children. June and her sister Nina moved to Swift Current in their late teens to begin waitressing at the Paris Café. She married in 1944 and Karen was born April 5, 1948. In 1951 Mom and Karen moved to Toronto where mom received her nurse's aid training. They moved back to Swift Current in 1953. Mom worked at the hospital for a while but the night shifts were difficult being a single mom. So she decied to take  a secretarial course and then went to work at SaskPower until her marriage to Dad on July 11, 1959. Neil was born the following year on August 15, 1960.

Mom thrived on taking care of her loved ones, her mom, her children, her grandchildren. She wasn't just a caregiver to her family; she had a calming and nurturing way with animals too. From horses, dogs, and cats on the farm growing up, to pet cats and dogs she and Dad had together. Their last dog Brady was absolutely spoiled by Mom, whatever meal she had at a restaurant , she always made sure a little bit was kept and brought home for Brady too.

Mom and Dad enjoyed camping and their favorite spots were Cypress Hills, Fairmont, and Banff. They also travelled and made trips to the west coast , Minnesota, Europe, Hawaii, and Toronto . They had a love for dancing and would travel around to different towns to old time dance and square dance. Mom was quite a bowler in her day and even won a few trophies. She enjoyed watching Blue Jays baseball and all the curling she could on TV, never missing a shot from her lazy boy. Mom got quite involved with  the NDP party and believed  that what was good for one was good for all. She was a member of the NDP executive in Swift Current for many years. The highlights of her week were Monday morning coffee with the coffee girls, Tuesday lunch at the Legion, getting her hair done Friday afternoons with pie and coffee after at Smitty's and Sunday morning breakfast at Spring's. Mom was always up to go for breakfast  whenever anyone was able to take her . Mom's family was very important to her, she never missed a birthday or anniversary and always made sure everyone had a birthday cake . Holidays were a special time too from the perfectly wrapped pajamas she would give each of us at Christmas to her annual July 1st BBQ that was the highlight of her summer and fell perfectly between seeding and harvest. After Dad passed, she filled her time with knitting dishcloths for everyone, working on her puzzles, watching her shows and being with the people she loved. A huge thank you to the staff at Cypress House- Unit 2, and The Meadows- House 8, for all of your care and kindness during mom's last year and to her special friends: Betty Pribyl, Rhonda Jackle, and Diane Cole, Mom loved you dearly.
