John Edward Chickoski passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2020 at The Meadows with his family by his side in Swift Current, SK.
John was born on 6 November 1934 at the family farm near St. Denis, SK to Peter and Annie (Komarnicki) Chickowski as the third of six children. John married Adeline "Adie" Pelat on 30 June 1956 in Saskatoon.
Together they had three children: Curtis, Shelley and Ward. John was a dedicated store manager of the OK Economy grocery store for four decades, in both Humboldt and Swift Current, after starting his career with them in Saskatoon. John was recognized as an exceptional store manager, leader and boss who started many young careers and was active in several community organizations, especially in Humboldt.
Adie passed away in 2009 after 53 years of marriage. Together the two of them, in true Ukrainian fashion, created a home filled with hospitality, fun and laughter that always had food and a drink waiting for any visitors that happened to come by.
John, known by his family as Gidi, was a man of few words, except when he talked about world events, history and of course the weather. He often had hilarious one liners aimed at Adie (Baba) that made everyone burst out laughing. He was classy, always a gentleman, and the most dedicated husband and father to his three children. He was blessed to have been married to the most generous, welcoming, fabulous cook and loving woman that ever lived, who always kept him on his toes and well fed through their life adventures which were many. Gidi was the definition of unwavering, reliable, strong work ethic, strong believer in education and family, honest and always busy and active in the background. He was committed to his church and quietly, regularly attended mass every weekend.
On June 26, Gidi took his final breath here on earth and his family and friends know, without a doubt, that Baba was dressed in her best dress and dancing shoes (with a 15 course meal prepared for him, obviously) waiting to give him a lecture on the other side for taking so terribly long to get there.
John is predeceased by his loving wife Adie, daughter Shelley Wiskar, grandson Curtis Chickoski, parents Peter & Annie Chickowski, sister Mary Korolewich, brothers Anthony Chickowski and Tony Chykowski, brother-in-law Ambrose Korolewich, sister-in-law Faye Chykowski and nephew Warren Chykowski.
John is survived by his two sons Curt (Julie) Chickoski of Swift Current, SK and Ward (Amelia) Chickoski of Edmonton, AB along with his 7 grandchildren: Loni (Adrian) Chubaty, Jill (Chris) Martens, Carly (Ryan) Neustaeter, Chance (Kim) Chickoski, Brett (Amber) Wiskar, Ella Chickoski and Maksym Chickoski. Also surviving John are his 12 great-grandchildren: Charli, Molly & Finnley Chubaty, Jerry, Maci & Wylie Martens, Lily, Eberly & Brooks Neustaeter, Scotlyn & Kash Chickoski and Teddy Wiskar along with brothers Victor (Novella) Chickowski and Peter (Mary) Chikowski and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
