Jessie McKenzie

Jessie Ann McKenzie, 68, of Swift Current passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022, after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer.  Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Fabian and Frances McKenzie.  Jessie was retired after spending 20+ years with the Government of Nova Scotia, MEP office, where many of her co-workers became some of her closest friends.  Prior to this she operated her own hair salon in Glace Bay, NS, which provided her the opportunity to volunteer with the Safe Grad program.  In between these careers, Jessie tackled  one of her proudest accomplishments, she graduated from UCCB (now Cape Breton University) with her BA in Community Studies.  Jessie was also an active Board Member of the Glace Bay Little League until resigning in 2022.  There are not enough words to describe what Jessie meant to the people around her.  She will be remembered for her unique sense of humour, great taste in music and movies, her caring nature, and unwavering support.  But most of all she will be remembered for her strength.  Jessie is survived by her 3 children: Sean Gillis (Kyla Rodgers), Dawn Gillis-Doyle (Jason Doyle), and Danielle Gillis (Troy Baum).  She was the loving Nanny to 9 grandchildren: Morgyn, Taylor, Gabrielle, Nathaniel, Regan, Caleb, Brennan, Keira, and Jensen. She was the supportive big sister to Adrienne, Frances “Sis”, Joanne, and Fabian.  She is also survived by her 6 nephews: Jim, Keith, Rick, Griffyn, Cody, Graidy; niece Ally; and former husband and close friend Archie Gillis.  Besides her parents, Jessie was predeceased by stepfather Fabian Curry.  A special thank you to the Swift Current Palliative Care team, Home Care staff, and the staff at Clover House.  Memorial donations may be made to the Dr, Noble Irwin Foundation or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.  A Celebration of Life will be held for Jessie in Cape Breton, NS, at a later date.  Arrangements entrusted to Warren's Funeral Home.
