Janina "Jean" Majkowski Obituary

MAJKOWSKI – Mrs. Janina (Jean) Majkowski formerly of Swift Current, SK, passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital – General Campus, Ottawa, ON on Sept. 8, 2021 at the age of 91 years. The internment of the cremated ashes at Mount Pleasant Burial Park in Swift Current, SK and the family/friends gathering is to take place during the summer of 2022.  Janina is survived by her faithful son Mark and his wife Pam (nee Puchelak) as well as her grandson Ben of Ottawa, Ontario. She was predeceased by her loving and caring husband Jozef in 2003, by her father Jan Kucharski in 1943, her mother Karolina (nee Gasior) in 1944, and her two brothers and one sister.  Janina was born on January 22, 1930 in Jaroslaw, Poland.  This is the region where she spent her childhood and early adult life. After the death of her parents during the World War II years, Janina with the help of her grandma took care of her sister and younger brother as well as their parents’ farmland. With Poland in the midst of World War II and the responsibilities around the home after her parents’ deaths, her schooling was both limited and curtailed due to the added home responsibilities.  Due to some friends who recently immigrated to Canada from Poland in the earlier 1960’s, they got Janina informed about a hard-working good-looking gentleman named Jozef Majkowski who came to Canada from Poland years earlier. They began exchanging letters with each other and then Janina arrived in Canada in late 1965 to see Jozef in person. It was love at first sight as on Dec.31, 1965 that Josef and Janina were married in Lisieux, SK.  Together they had a son, Mark, in 1967 and moved to Swift Current in 1969. While Jozef worked many years for the C.P.R., Janina started working when Mark began kindergarten. She had numerous cleaning jobs ranging from maid work, to cleaning offices, churches and bakeries, as well as being a Healy Hotel chambermaid for many years in Swift Current. After her working days, Janina and Jozef continued living in their Swift Current home until Joe’s passing in 2003 and thereafter by Janina herself until 2011.  In 2011, Janina moved to Heritage Towers in Swift Current where she stayed until 2016. Afterwards, she moved closer to Mark’s family in Ottawa and lived in a retirement residence for 3 years and then 2 years at a nursing home until her passing after spending a week in a hospital. Janina was very loyal to her family, church and community. She liked talking to people and getting to know how their families were doing as well as gardening, cooking, sewing and the company of family and friends. She particularly enjoyed her local church and serving the Lord Jesus Christ through it. Janina is grateful for the Swift Current catholic community that allowed her to participate in countless CWL and choir functions and meet so many good people. She will be fondly remembered by her family and friends, who will forever cherish the happy memories with Janina.  In memory of Janina and for those wishing to do so, donations made to the Dementia Society of Ottawa would be appreciated by the family.
