James Rath Obituary

ATH: James (Jim) Stanley age 71 of Success, SK and recently of Regina, SK passed away peacefully on December 2, 2018 at the Regina Wascana Grace Hospice. Jim is lovingly remembered by his sister Deborah (David) Jackow of Big River, SK and their children, Jim’s nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews: Nadine (Byron) Zakoski and their children Seth, Harley and Brenna, Jarret (Tasha Hartnett) Jackow and their children Deklin and Makenna, Taya (Devin) Beaudoin and their children Oscar, Juno, Rori and Cru, and Sasha (Megan Gascon) Jackow and their son Atlas. He was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Frances (Frankie) and sister Karon. Jim was born on December 30, 1946 at the Swift Current Hospital and returned home by plane with Frankie as the roads home to the farm were blocked with snow. Jim attended one roomed Orillia School until its closure, Success School, and although school was not his favorite, he travelled long bus rides to Swift Current Comprehensive School to graduate Grade 12. One of his first jobs was night watchman and maintenance for the York Hotel in Swift Current, he was a laborer for UGG Grain Company and travelled throughout the province with the company. Some folks might remember him in Indian Head as he became their hockey mascot, dressing up as a smurf for all their games.

Returning home to Success he restored the church where he took up residence, helped Frankie at the post office, Karon with catering and spent several years helping with harvest at the Higginson farm. He enjoyed wood working and built the odd small shed to sell and then became passionate about scrolling pictures and ornaments that he gave to family and sold at craft shows, and even taught a few scrolling lessons at the Success School. Community minded he was always eager to volunteer at Sports Days, and any other event that took place. Those who knew Jim know he never missed a crib game, a smear tournament or a sports event on TV or in the area. Proud of his extended family, he never missed an opportunity to contact them, and in turn let his friends know what they were doing. Never much of a traveler out of this province, when he decided to travel to Cuba with his dear friend Debbie, it became a highlight in his life and folks here as well as there will recall “Dill Pickle Vodka – No Ice”.

The family will hold a Celebration of Jim’s Life in Success to be announced at a later date. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Success Community Hall P.O.
