Jacob Merald Berg Obituary

Jacob Merald Berg, age 89, passed away on January 23, 2026, after a short stay in hospital.

Jacob was born on March 12, 1936, in Bluemenort, Ukraine, to Jacob and Gertrud Berg.  In 1948, he immigrated to Canada with his widowed father, two brothers, and two sisters settling in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where he would build a life rooted in hard work, family, and community.

Jacob began his career with the Department of Highways in Regina in the construction division.  It was shortly thereafter that he met Delphine, whom he married, and together they moved to Prince Albert, where they raised their three children, Lissa, Darren and Brian.  In 1968, the family returned to Swift Current, where Jacob continued his work with the Department of Highways as a Maintenance Supervisor.  He dedicated 35 years of service before retiring, earning respect for his knowledge and leadership.

Following retirement, Jacob found joy in building and creating, with a lifelong passion for renovations and construction.  An excellent craftsman and builder, he took great pride in quality workmanship and doing things right.

In later years, Jacob lived with macular degeneration for over 15 years, which gradually affected his vision and ultimately led to the loss of his ability to drive which he missed the most.  After the age of 85, he experienced several significant falls that resulted in serious injuries, which further limited his mobility.  Through these challenges, Jacob adjusted to the changes brought by aging and illness.

Jacob had a deep love for politics and history and was always ready for a discussion over a cup of coffee.  Jacob especially loved taking long drives through southern Saskatchewan with a favorite stop at the Saskatchewan Landing.  Through his work, he came to know the backroads intimately, and those drives became a cherished way for him to reflect, explore and connect with the province he knew so well.

Jacob was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Gertrude Berg and his stepmother Justina (Hubner) as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is lovingly remembered by Delphine Berg, his devoted wife of 62 years; his children: Lissa (Rodney) of Olds, AB, Darren (Sarah) of Kelowna, BC, and Brian of Cumberland, BC; his three grandchildren: Emma, Jacob, and Wulfgang; his brothers: Walter (Mona) and Abe (Grace); his sisters: Hilde and Gertrude (Henry); and extended family and friends.

Jacob will be remembered for his integrity, craftsmanship, curiosity, and the steady presence he brought to the lives of those who knew and loved him.

Jacob belonged to Christ the Redeemer Parish was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
