Iris Slusar
December 28, 1935 – April 7, 2026
The family wishes to announce with deep sorrow, the passing of beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Iris Slusar at the age of 90, on April 7, 2026.
Iris was born December 28, 1935, in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. She attended school in Rosthern until the age of 12. Then the family loaded up the horse and carriage and moved to Carrot River, Saskatchewan. Iris met John Slusar and they got married October 30, 1955. Mom and dad farmed Northwest of Carrot River, growing crops and raising farm animals, mostly sheep. Along with all the work on the farm, mom and dad started their family of six children. It was a very busy little household. In 1967, mom and dad loaded up the family and moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where John pursued a paving career. Iris was a stay at home mom and she raised six kids, mostly on her own as dad was always on the road with his work.
She was an amazing mother who loved baking bread, perogi’s, and all the traditional Ukrainian foods. We could always look forward to fresh buns or cookies at home after school and never went hungry. She was the driver to all the boys hockey games and activities, and kept everyone in order. She never tired of watching their sports over the years. She continued to enjoy watching sports on TV, mostly hockey and curling, and she was a very knowledgeable fan and critic. Mom enjoyed playing Rummy and Solitaire back in the day, and loved working on puzzles. You could usually find one on the table when she didn’t feel like going down to the common room.
After dad‘s passing, she made her condo her home where she made lots of friends and enjoyed her space. She loved watching all her grandkids grow up and raise families of their own. She especially enjoyed seeing all her great grandchildren when they popped over, or having FaceTime with the ones that live away. It was very fortunate that Mom was able to remain independent and in her own home for her entire life.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Deb (Milan) Sekerak - Kari (Clayton)Stenson, Lindsey Sekerak, Derek (Jordi) Sekerak, and her 5 sons: Larry (Judi) - Amber (Shaun) Reeves, Kurtis (Kristy) Slusar, Lauren (Joe) Carnahan, Ed (Cindy) - Bobbi-Jo (Bryce) Dureault, Coe (Branden) Slusar, Levi (Zac) Friesen, Randy (Adriana) - Carly (Bryce) Slusar, Kyle (Carmen) Slusar Rick (Lisa) - Taylor Slusar, Dyson (Katie)Slusar, Hope Slusar, Dale (Michelle) - Cade (Jackie) Slusar, Charis (Shawn) Conly, and 27 great grandchildren. She is also survived by: sister Pat (Gary) Venaas, Ray (Barb) Hnatiw, Morris (Steph) Hnatiw.
Iris is predeceased by her husband John 2008, infant daughter Cindy, brother Bob Hnatiw, sister Sally Pihowich.
In respect of Iris’s wishes there will be no formal funeral service. A private family celebration of life will be held.
