Irene Shiels Obituary

It is with great sadness, the family of Irene Shiels, announce her passing on July 15, 2022 at Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current, SK. She was born July 17, 1927 in Tompkins, SK, to James and Alice Smith. She was raised along with her siblings, Doris, Reg and Clifford on the family farm at Nadeauville, SK. As a child, Irene worked hard on the family farm and her love of farm life continued for the rest of her days. Irene married Peter Shiels on April 15, 1947 in Medicine Hat, AB. They settled on the Shiels family farm, where they raised their four children. After Peter’s death in 1971, she stayed on the farm and continued to support the farming operations, while raising cattle, chickens, and pigs. She took great pride in her garden, as well as her flower beds. Irene loved to travel and take photos. There are numerous photo albums and scrapbooks full of her travels, near and far. Her albums are also full of photos of family and friends, which she cherished deeply. There was nothing she loved more than a house full of family during the holidays, and people stopping in for a visit throughout the year. Once inside, you were treated to her homemade goodies, a cup of tea and you never left without one of her big, warm hugs.  Irene was active in the community of Hazlet. She loved her church family, as well as her many years with the Royal Canadian Legion. She was a Grandma to many and enjoyed her visits with everyone. Irene was predeceased by: her parents, husband, brothers, sister, most of her in-laws, step-grandson Jason Stern, and many good friends. She is survived by her children: daughter, Karen Stusrud, her children Shantell (Donald), Marlen (Aimee); son, Ken Shiels, his children Kody (Alissa), Kara, and Kurt; son Rob (Jan) Shiels, his daughter Kenda (Kurt); and daughter Fran (Kevin) Marlin, and their children, Krista (Kelly), and Kayla (Kole). She loved being a great-grandma to: Ashleigh, McKenzie, Brett, Rissa, Ally, Taylor, Brendan, Ivy, Myles, Ava, Harper, Bohdi and Adley. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Elsie Smith, and is fondly remembered by her many nephews, nieces and friends.  A funeral service will be held July 29, 2022 at 2pm at the hall in Hazlet, SK with Carola Anderson officiating.
