Howard Schuetz Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, father and grandfather, Howard Lloyd Schuetz.  Howard was born in Swift Current on April 9, 1942 to Vivian and Albert Schuetz. Howard grew up and lived his entire life at Neidpath, Saskatchewan where he met his beloved wife Judy. Howard is predeceased by his wife Judy Schuetz (Schaitel) and his parents Vivian and Albert Schuetz. Howard leaves to mourn his passing his sister Dianne Ivey (Ray); his sons Michael Schuetz, Steven Schuetz (Richelle) and Trevor Schuetz; his grandchildren Megan, Benjamin, Matthew, Jude, Chloe and Sophia. He will also be remembered by his sisters in law Pat Coward, Terry Braun (Ivan) and his brother in law Richard Schaitel (Bernice) as well as many nieces and nephews. Howard's love for his family was only rivaled by his love of the land. Howard grew up in Neidpath when it was still a town but fell in love with the land when his family moved to his Grandfathers farm just outside of town in 1953. Howard always helped his father Albert and started a farm of his own around the time he got married in 1964. Howard and his father farmed together as partners for the next four decades. He always had a passion for farm equipment and machinery. Howard and his father were among the first farmers in the district to switch from seeding with diskers to seeding with hoe drills. Howard's passion for the land and farming continued into his later years as he continued to farm full time with his son Michael at an age most people would consider retiring. Only the battle Howard had with cancer this past year kept him off the tractor-missing planting his own crop for the first time in 60 years. Howard also loved to work with animals. After Howard's father sold his cattle in the early 1980's Howard was at a crossroads. Having only a small herd himself, he either needed to sell them all or find another way to add value. He decided that a small herd of purebred cattle would be the best way to go and Lazy S Red Angus began. Working with local breeders like Flying K at Wymark, Howard and his sons build up a respectable heard and sold bulls across southern Saskatchewan for the next 25 years before selling the herd to a breeder in Manitoba in 2010. In Howard's early years of farming it was hard to get him away from the field or the cattle or off the farm at all. His work ethic and drive came from remembering the lean years when he started farming and so he worked hard and saved a lot to make sure his family would never feel those hard times again. As the years went on and grandchildren appeared Howard took more time for family. Howard will be remembered as the father and grandfather who was warm, kind, and generous with his love and time. We would often see him down on the living room floor playing with his grandchildren and their toys for hours at a time. Howard will live on through his children and grandchildren who will always remember him fondly as a hard-working, thoughtful and proud man. Howard had a happy and successful life, but it was not without its challenges, the greatest of which was losing Judy, the love of his life, to cancer in 1995. Later Howard faced his own challenge with cancer being diagnosed in 2003 with prostate cancer which he eventually beat and was declared cancer free. However, nagging stomach issues that started in 2008 were finally diagnosed in the spring of 2019 as pancreatic cancer. After an intense but unsuccessful course of chemotherapy Howard decided to focus on the quality of his remaining time. Against all odds Howard rallied, regained his strength and returned home to his beloved farm and spent much of his remaining months with his family. The family would like to thank Dr. Samuel Bakare for his ongoing treatment and support and the staff of Clover House for their tireless work in keeping Howard comfortable during both of his stays. The family is moved by the generous wishes of support in this time of mourning. The Funeral Service was held Friday, February 21, 2020, from St. Olaf's Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Kiel officiating. The Interment Service was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
