Garnet Robert Maalerud: It is with sadness that the family of Garnet announce his passing on September 14, 2021 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB. The Celebration of Life was held at 2:00 p.m. on September 20, 2021 at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were all the many, many people who knew and loved him. Garnet is survived by his step-mother, Lottie Maalerud of Swift Current, SK; brothers, Les (Brenda) Maalerud of Kamloops, BC and children Carmen, Ryan and Ewan, Carl (Dawn) Maalerud of Piapot, SK and children Kelly, Rhyse, Eve and Anu; sister, Carol (Keith) Bitschy of Lethbridge, AB and children, Angela, Amber and Andrea; and 10 great-nieces and nephews. Garnet was predeceased by his father, Bob Maalerud, mother, Marjorie Maalerud, infant sister, and all grandparents. Garnet was born in Kyle, Saskatchewan on November 2, 1961, and attended school at White Bear School and then Kyle School. After serving the people of Canada for more than three decades at Canada Post, he retired in Dec 2020. Garnet was very much his own person. He lived his life his way; spending his time doing the things he really loved to do. He enjoyed playing hockey with the Canada Post League and other leagues in Calgary. He loved his cars and motorcycles. His real passion was playing the guitar and performing. He was self-taught and very talented. He wrote several incredible songs. He had been married for a period of his life, Those of us who know him well will hear him sing "Mary Jane is the One for me". He lit right up when he was asked to perform and always brought along his guitar when he travelled. His house was well known for the awesome jam sessions. Garnet was a quiet, gentle deeply caring man. He loved his friends and family wholeheartedly. His passing is such a shock to us all. He will be missed by both friends and family; his absence leaves a huge hole in so many people's lives. Arrangements entrusted to Warren's Funeral Home.
