Fred Peterson Obituary

FERDINAND (FRED) ROBERT PETERSON of Gull Lake, SK, and more recently of Unity, Sask. passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at the age of 95. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Ilene; daughters Doris-Kaye (Larry) Wiens & Janet (Jim) Martin; 5 grandchildren, Bob (Candace) Martin, Melinda (Lee) Martin, Duncan (Ashley) Martin, Kevin (Kaye) Martin, Pam (Mike) Leclerc; 12 great grandchildren; brother Everett (Merle); many nieces and nephews.

Fred is predeceased by his parents Oscar Fred and Margaret Peterson; brothers Donald and Glen; sister & brother-in-law, Frances & Gerry Moat; great grandson, Emmett McKenzie Martin.

Ferdinand Robert Peterson was born in Gull Lake, SK to parents Fred & Margaret Peterson on June 21, 1924 being the oldest of 5. He spent his early years on the family farm 9 miles north of Gull Lake where he attended school at the Carricklea School.  He moved to Ontario to haul logs and then came back to Gull Lake to farm for 40 years.

He met Ilene Collier at a dance and was married July 31, 1946 in a double wedding with her sister Leota (Stan) Steele on the Bert Collier farm.

After his marriage to Ilene, the couple went away every winter to work so they could farm. He worked at McLeod's in Rosetown, a box factory in Calgary, railroad yards in Cranbrook, B.C., a coal mine in Edmonton and hauled logs for his best friend Howard in Houston, B.C.

We sold the farm in 1996, but lived on the acreage until 2003 to move into Gull Lake.  In 2012 we moved to a condo in Swift Current and in March 2015 moved to Parkview Place in Unity.

In 1955 Fred joined the Masonic Lodge and later the Shriners.  He held many positions within the Lodge as well as in Eastern Star.  Fred loved to dance and play cards with family and friends. Fred & Ilene loved travelling across Canada, USA, Alaska & Hawaii; and spent 30 years in Arizona for the winters. Most of all Fred loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Graveside Service was held for immediate family at Swift Current Memory Gardens on Saturday, August 22, 2020. The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date.
