Olson: Evelyn Margaret (Jackson) Olson, age 97 years of Swift Current and formerly of Stewart Valley, passed away on May 19, 2020 at The Meadows. Evelyn was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 11, 1922. After the death of her mother, Evelyn resided in an orphanage with her siblings until her father re-married and was able to care for his five children again. During the WWII years, high School students were recruited to enter nurse's training. While in grade 11, Evelyn moved to the residence provided and began three years of nurse's training at the Halifax Children's Hospital. Upon completion of the Registered Nurse's program, Evelyn worked at The Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, the Royal Columbia Hospital in New Westminster and the Swift Current Union Hospital. In the 1940s, nurses could travel and work at multiple hospitals. Evelyn decided to embark on a cross-Canada train trip funded by stops along the way where she worked until she had enough money to continue the adventure. On this trip, Evelyn stopped in Swift Current and met Clarence Olson of the Beaver Flat District. Soon after Evelyn's departure, Clarence contacted her in Vancouver to let her know there was a Night Supervisor's position at the Swift Current Union Hospital. She got the job and on July 16, 1949 Evelyn married Clarence at the First United Church in Swift Current; it was a double wedding ceremony with Rose and Paul Redmond. Evelyn was accustomed to "city things" like electricity, indoor plumbing, telephones and reliable heat but she viewed her new, rustic way of life as a marvellous opportunity. Evelyn was immediately welcomed into the community and she became the resident medical expert. She eagerly learned to garden, to preserve fruit and vegetables, to drive a truck and everything else it took to become a farm wife. Clarence and Evelyn retired to Stewart Valley in the early 1980's. There Evelyn honed her gardening skills in her new yard. She also became part of the Stewart Valley Horticultural Club, the reading club, the United Church and the Happy Valley Senior's Centre. In the fall of 2016, Evelyn moved to Southview Apartments in Kyle where she lived independently until a heart attack in 2017 forced her to enter long term care at The Meadows in Swift Current. Evelyn remained fiercely independent until the end. Evelyn and Clarence travelled many times to Nova Scotia to visit her family. Often these trips were in a truck camper. Evelyn and Clarence also travelled to Norway to connect with Olson relatives. Evelyn was engaged in reading, writing poetry, writing letters and gardening (her tomato plants are ready to transplant) for her entire life. Although, she did not
have a nurse's position after her children were born, Evelyn continued to care for everyone around her. The day before she passed away at The Meadows, Evelyn offered to sit with a fellow resident who was ill. This passage describes Evelyn, "You don't need superpowers to make the world a better place. You've got something real: a caring heart and wise words, a shoulder to cry on and a can-do attitude, and a smile that can soothe hurts, lift hopes and somehow make everything all right again". Evelyn is survived by her sons, Lawrence (Kathryn), Stephen, David, Michael (Gayleen) and her daughter, Denise (Marty) Schneider. She is also survived by grandchildren, Dustin (Nikki) Olson, Alexandra (Chad) Welta, Colby (Tatum) Schneider, Nelson (Acacia) Schneider, Dalton (Ashlyn) Schneider, Alyssa (Chad Brandon) Olson. Sydney Olson, Connor Olson and Lauren Olson. Evelyn's great grandchildren are Jayden Olson, Anika Welta, Cailem Welts, Madelyn Schneider, Camryn Schneider and Claire Schneider. Evelyn was predeceased by parents, Ira and Edith Jackson, husband (Arne) Clarence Olson, son, Barry Olson, grandson, Lukas Olson, brothers, Frank. Harold, Lawrence and sisters Jean, Ora and Estelle. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date at the Nordland Lutheran Church. The Olson family would like to thank the staff at The Meadows for kind and patient care of our very special mom. Mom always remarked that, "this place is just marvellous."
