Shannon; Ervin Robert Thomas age 89 of Hazlet Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2023 at the Gull Lake Special Care Centre. The funeral was held at 2:00 pm, December 22, 2023 from the Hazlet Community Hall, with Elaine Little officiating. Elaine Little read the eulogy and his only Grandchildren Kalese Simek and Wesley Shannon read the special memories. The internment service was held at the Hazlet Cemetery. The active pallbearers were Barry Stock, Larry Sletten, Mark Stock, Barry Zinn, Harold Mickelson and Brian Olson. Honorary pallbearers were Eldon McIntyre, Garnet Anderson and Gerald Shaw. Ervin is survived by his wife of almost 67 years Louise Shannon, Son Tom Shannon and Daughter-in-law Patti Shannon, Granddaughter: Kalese and husband Josh Simek, Grandson Wesley Shannon and wife Sam. Great Grandchildren; Micky Simek, Reese, and Crew Shannon. Sister Norma Thoreson and numerous Nephews, Nieces and Great Nephews and Nieces. Sisters-in-law: Yelva Mickelson and Darlene Johnston. Ervin was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Bernice Shannon, Son Robert Shannon, Brother: Don (Francis) Shannon, Sister Eileen (Stanley) Yake, Sister Iona (Allen) Thoreson, Brother-in-law Ron Thoreson, Nephew Brian Thoreson and Great niece Shannon Quintin.
Ervin was born on October 30, 1934 in Cabri, Saskatchewan. He attended Hazlet School in Hazlet, Saskatchewan. Ervin married Louise (Johnston) on February 8, 1957 at the First United Church in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Ervin farmed his entire life and lived and grew up two miles east of Hazlet. He farmed alongside his Dad Oscar and Brother Don, later he farmed with his Son Tom and Grandson Wesley.
Ervin was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was also on the Hazlet Co-op board, the UGG Board, member of the Gull Lake Elks and sat on Hazlet Village Council for a number of years.
Ervin enjoyed hunting in his younger years. He and Louise spent many summers camping, boating and fishing at the northern lakes in Saskatchewan, especially Loon and Ministikwan Lake. The two of them travelled to Arizona, B.C, Mexico, and Alaska. For over 30 years they enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii. In later years they both enjoyed their visits to their Son Tom's cabin near Porcupine Plain, SK. In the fall of 2022 they moved to the Riverview Estates in Swift Current. Ervin was proud of his heritage and family roots in Hazlet. He was well known for his stories and was a wealth of historical memories. He always enjoyed a cup of coffee, a cigarette or two, listening to the news and Old Time Country Music on his radio. Ervin will be deeply missed by his wife who cared for him lovingly,and his entire family. Rest in Peace Grandpa “Spike”.
