Elphege Laverdiere Obituary

Joseph Gorges ELPHEGE Laverdiere
January 30, 1926 – December 24, 2022 (age 96)
The family of Elphege Laverdiere of Swift Current is saddened to announce his passing on Saturday, December 24 at the Elrose Health Centre, SK.  Elphege will be lovingly remembered by his wife Claire Patricia (“Pat”) Covey-Laverdiere, daughter Claire (Charlie) Laverdiere, sister Helen Levesseur, brother Andre Laverdiere, step-children Patty Schryver and Mike (Marina) Covey; grandchildren Ashley (Alicia) Dyck, Mike (Sarah) and Chris Covey, Casey (Leo) Chartier, Tyler (Carissa) and Shane (Rachelle) Covey, and numerous great grandchildren and extended family members.  Elphege was predeceased by his parents Narcisse and Leda, wife Lena (nee Perrault), sons Paul and Denis, stepson Steve, and brother Lucien.  Elphege was born in Saint-Rémi, Les Jardins-de-Napierville, Quebec, the second of four children. He grew up on the homestead in the Lac Pelletier area south of Swift Current where his family produced grain crops and raised horses.  Elphege and his older brother Lucien attended school in their early years at the Gravelbourg Convent, then moved home to attend school in the Lac Pelletier area and help with the farm. The work was hard but rewarding, and provided the source for many great stories.  Elphege married Lena Perrault in 1953, and they made a home of their own, raising their three children and enjoying life in the country. Always a hard worker, in addition to the farm work Elphege also drove school bus.  After the loss of his son Paul in 1975 and Lena in 1976 he kept working at the farm, and over time became more involved with the Swift Current community. After retiring in 1994 he stayed connected socially with family and friends, including attending dances in the city where he met Pat Covey. They married in 1995 and went on to enjoy 27 years together.  He stayed busy throughout life, as it always seemed there was something to do. He found enjoyment in many pastimes including gardening, cards, dancing, bowling and carpentry projects. He was always ready to play a game of crib or have a visit with his children or even just run an errand downtown.  Elphege was a great father and step-father to his children and extended family, and a dedicated and loving husband. He was thoughtful and patient, and we’re all grateful and blessed to have shared in his life.  A funeral mass for Elphege will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 12:30 pm, at Christ the Redeemer Parish in Swift Current, with Fr. Thomas Mutavanattu officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to either the Elrose Health Centre or Christ the Redeemer Catholic Parish.  And a special thanks to the staff at the Elrose Health Centre and the Rosetown & District Health Centre for helping provide comfort and care to Elphege during his stays at their facilities.  Arrangements entrusted to Warren’s Funeral Home.
