David McLeod Obituary

Norman David Kenwell McLeod (DAVID)

It is with great sadness the family of David McLeod advise of his passing on December 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer related complications.

Born in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan on March 24, 1949, to William (Bill) and Edith (Johnstone) McLeod, David grew up and spent most of his life south of Gull Lake on the ranch his grandfather settled in the Swift Current Creek valley.

He worked tirelessly at everything that was put in front of him, helping friends and neighbours when needed, and continuing to put in as many hours for as long as he possibly could. He was proud of changes on the ranch over the years from his self-propelled bale wagon to his irrigation system to his gravel pit. Whether it was growing crops or hay, whistling while moving cattle, crushing gravel, picking Saskatoon berries, fishing in the creek, or finding the first crocus in spring or interesting rocks to add to his collection, David cherished being in the valley. It truly was his home, and he loved being there.

David especially enjoyed the time he was able to spend with his children, grandchildren, family, and friends - both near and far. He always tried to make time for everyone and regretted the times he couldn’t do more. Road tours, fowl suppers, visiting in town, on the road or on the phone, and having coffee at the kitchen table with Audrey or whomever was able to join him made each day that much more interesting. He enjoyed meeting people and hearing their stories, and everyone's story stayed with him for the next conversation he had with them. No matter where he went, or who came to the yard, it didn't take long for a connection to be made; he would know somebody or someplace that they knew. That might sound hard to believe, but it was very true in his case, and after a while we came to expect it!

Predeceased by his parents, David will be deeply and forever missed by his best friend and partner of 25 years Audrey Burton, his children Cory (Heather), Melissa, and Jared (Leanne), his cherished grandchildren Luke and Kate, his sister Bonnie (Allan) Anderson, his nephews Geoffrey (Tyrel and McKayla) Anderson and Galen Anderson, as well as many cousins and friends.

We sincerely thank the Allan Blair Cancer Centre in Regina, and the amazing satellite team in Swift Current hospital, for the efforts they undertook to keep him with us as long as possible.  We so appreciate the care that he received over the years from doctors, nurses, and caregivers, including the invaluable team in Gull Lake.

“Your labour is done, your legacy lives on,
Your love of the land,
And we will close the gate.”
