Darrell James Foster, September 7, 1944 – January 18, 2026.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Darrell James Foster, on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the Gravelbourg Foyer d’Youville, at the age of 81 years, surrounded by his loving family.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara; daughter Shannon Lamb (Garth) and grandson Cody Lamb and granddaughter Paige Crozier (Darby); son Brett (Marla) and granddaughter Annissa Crosbie (Eric), great-granddaughter Margot James, and granddaughter Zoe; his brother Randy Foster and sister Ardell Glenmore; niece Dana Murphy (Trevor) and family; nephew Travis Foster (Keeley) and family.
He will also be dearly missed by his sister-in-law Kathie (Brian) Saunderson, brother-in-law Cramond (Tracy) Knapton-Pain, the Foster and Gjertsen cousins, and many long-time friends. Darrell was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Irene Foster; brother-in-law Mike Glenmore; sister-in-law Myrna Foster; nephew Chris Flag; and his in-laws, Thomas and Margaret Knapton-Pain.
Darrell was born in Regina while his father was overseas during the Second World War and was raised on the family farm near Bracken, Saskatchewan. He attended school in Bracken and Climax, completing his high school education at Swift Current Collegiate Institute (SCCI). After graduation, he began his accounting career with Burroughs, Hanlon & Weber, Chartered Accountants, in Swift Current. During a credit union audit in 1965, he met his future wife, Barbara, and they were married the following year. They welcomed two children, Shannon and Brett completing their family. The family later moved to Frontier, Saskatchewan, when Darrell accepted a comptroller position with Friggstad Manufacturing. There, they built their dream home on an acreage and cherished their rural lifestyle. In the mid-1980s, they returned to Swift Current, where Darrell began a long and fulfilling career in the credit union system—first with Pioneer Credit Union as branch manager until 1993, and then with Moose Jaw Credit Union (now Conexus) as Manager of Lending until 2003. While he valued his work, he especially treasured the many colleagues and staff members he worked alongside over the years.
Darrell and Barbara retired in 2003 and spent the next five years RVing full-time across Canada and nearly every U.S. state. In 2008, they resettled in Swift Current to be closer to family and spent the next nine winters in one of their favorite places—the Palm Springs area. During this time, they also traveled extensively, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Greece, many European countries, Great Britain and Ireland, as well as Alaska and the Yukon, along with enjoying several cruises.
Darrell faced many trials in his life with courage, grace, and acceptance. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 44 years and offered a hand of recovery to many along the way. In 2008, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and worked diligently to live well with this incurable condition. While wintering away, he discovered Parkinson’s support groups, and with encouragement from these connections, Darrell and Barbara organized a Parkinson’s Support Group in Swift Current in 2011—a group that continues to offer support and information to those living with Parkinson’s and their care partners.
Darrell loved many things, especially curling, golfing, and fishing; the Toronto Blue Jays and the Saskatchewan Roughriders; hot dogs, ice cream and Doritos; and he never missed watching the Masters Golf Tournament every April. Most of all, he loved his family—especially his cherished grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He was kind, generous, and a bit of a perfectionist, who learned the art of accepting life as it came. With a quiet, deep faith, Darrell lived a life of unwavering integrity. He leaves behind love, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.
The family would especially like to thank Darrell’s caregivers at The Willows at Riverview Village Estates, as well as the compassionate staff at the Foyer d’Youville, for the tender and loving care they provided. Darrell and his family deeply appreciated your kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Church in Swift Current, Saskatchewan with Pastor Reverend Greg Kiel officiating. For those who are unable to attend you may go on the livestream link.
