Cornelius "Cornie" Unger Obituary

UNGER: Cornelius (Cornie), age 87, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2021 at the Meadows in Swift Current, SK. Cornie was predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth [(Liz) nee Klassen] in October of 2016. Cornie was born January 4, 1934 on the family farm near McMahon, SK. He was the 10th child of Herman and Maria Unger. He was always a farm boy at heart and often spoke of his memories of growing up on the family farm. Cornie went to the Hopefield for elementary school and then to McMahon for several years of high school. He completed grade 12 in 1951 at the Swift Current Collegiate. Upon completion of high school Cornie went to Normal School in Moose Jaw and obtained a teaching certificate. He eventually completed a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Saskatchewan. In 1956, while teaching at the Falkland School Cornie met Liz and they were married in August of 1958. Cornie and Liz began their family with sons Kevin (1960), Perry (1965) and Grant (1972). Cornie continued to have a successful teaching career in the Swift Current School District as a teacher, vice principal and principal. He retired from teaching in 1984 but continued his second career as a hail insurance crop adjuster for a number of years upon his retirement from teaching. Cornie and Liz loved to spend their summers at the family cabin at the Resort Village of Beaver Flat. Here they spent countless hours with family and friends gardening, golfing, fishing, socializing and enjoying time on the boat. Cornie was an excellent athlete and loved to play softball, curl and in later years enjoy his daily swim at the condo on Alpine Crescent. He also dedicated many hours to service clubs in Swift Current including the Shriners and the Kinsmen. Cornie is lovingly remembered by his children and their families. Kevin, Sandra and their daughter Megan (Brooks Ford) and great grandson Bo. Perry and Elaine, Grant, Michelle and their son Quinn. Cornie is survived by his siblings Peter, Agatha and Anna (Ray). He was predeceased by his wife Liz, his granddaugher Summer, his siblings John, Mary, Herman, Helen, Kay, Jake, Ike, and Ernie and Liz's parents John and Anna Klassen, and her siblings. The family wishes to extend their gratitude and thanks to his home care providers at Riverview and the Meadows, as well as, Dr. Lee and the nurses at the Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current.
