Alviena Martens Obituary

MARTENS:  Alviena Violet nee Schroeder, went to be with the Lord on January 18th, 2020. She was predeceased by her husband of almost 65 years, Reuben Melvin Martens.  She is survived by her daughter Holly Larsen (Scott), her son Kimbal Dean Martens (Tonia) and Twila Helle (Garth), 7 grandchildren - Curtis Helle (Jen), Tiffany Adams (Brandon), Dustin Helle (Steph), Bria Magra (Matt), Ty Martens(Rachel), Jessa Dewick (Rylan), Tanner Larsen and 6 great grandchildren, as well as her brother Alvin Schroeder (Jo Anne) and her brother-in-law Tony Martens.  Alviena was born in 1929 in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan. She grew up in Main Centre, Saskatchewan.  At 16, Alviena and her family moved to Vancouver.  When Reuben's mother, Marie Martens passed away, Alviena wrote a sympathy card to Reuben.  This began a long distance courtship and eventually they married in 1952.  They moved to Saskatchewan where they farmed and purchased a farm of their own.  Alviena prepared many meals during harvest season, often taking the meals to the field.  She loved to surprise others with a gift of homemade pie and other treats.  She left many handwritten cookbooks for her family to continue the baking tradition.  Her deep freeze was always overflowing and to quote Tonia Martens(Kimbal) she had a magic freezer!  She and Reuben served in the Main Centre Church as deacons and Bible Study leaders.  When Reuben retired from farming they moved to Swift Current and attended Bridgeway Church for many years.  Alviena's favorite and much quoted Bible verse was Isaiah 41:10 -So do not fear; I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand for I am the Lord."  When Alviena passed away the previous passage was bookmarked and highlighted.  Alviena must be enjoying heaven, being with Jesus and the many friends and family members she had lost over the years.  Alviena was 90 years old.  The graveside service was held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 from the Main Centre Mennonite Brethren Church Cemetery.  Donations in Alviena's memory may be made to the Westbank Bible Camp, Box 1841, Swift Current, SK  S9H 4M6.  Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.  For further information call 306-773-8831 or 1-800-267-6606 or visit our website at www.warrensfuneralhome.com and express your sympathy on the family tribute wall.
