It is with great sadness that the family of Alma Marlene Slywka (nee Schofield) announce her unexpected passing on February 6, 2026, in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. Alma was born on June 30, 1946, in Swift Current and was raised on the family farm near Beverly. As a child, she was active in 4H, and numerous other activities, and she greatly treasured her upbringing. Alma completed her stenographer training at Balfour Technical School before beginning her career with the psychiatric services branch in Weyburn in 1968. It wasn't long before Alma met Peter and they were married in 1971. Peter and Alma moved to Gull Lake in 1977 where they integrated themselves into the community and raised their family.
In the midst of caring for her four boys, Alma was known as the town seamstress for many years. In many ways, Alma's ability with a sewing machine demonstrated what a talented artist she was. She was highly skilled at sewing, knitting, quilting, and so much more. Her creations have been treasured by many, including children in Guatemala where she and other ladies partnered with missionaries to distribute their creations.
No matter how much sewing she had to do, Alma was always eager to welcome visitors to her table. Family members would often stop in for a visit and enjoy a meal with her and Peter before continuing their travels.
Alma leaves her husband, Peter; her sons Troy, Trevor (Jane), Dwight, and Shayne (Deanne) to mourn and grieve her sudden passing. Nothing brought Alma more joy than spending time with her 5 grandchildren. She will also be missed by her sister, Gerry. Alma was predeceased by her parents Charles (1998) and Isabelle (1995).
In memory of Alma, donations made to the Grandma’s for Guatemala through the Knox United Church in Gull Lake would be appreciated by the family.
Alma will be dearly missed.
