Allan Oliver Obituary

Oliver, Allan Roy:
Allan Oliver of Swift Current and formerly of Aneroid, passed away suddenly at home Wednesday evening, November 24th. He is survived by his loving wife, Gerry, of 64 years; his son, Eric Oliver, his daughter, Connie Williams; grandchildren, Peter and Jessica Williams (Dave), David, Zachary and Erin Oliver; sister, Mary Hudson, brother, Cecil Oliver (Joyce); brother-in-law, Earl Nostbakken (Mary Ann); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Mary Oliver, infant children, Timmy and Mathew Oliver, daughter-in-law, Wanda Oliver (Eric), sister, Kathryn Fisher, brothers-in-law, Al Fisher, Len Hudson and Garth Holtslander, sisters-in-law, Angeline Holtslander and Verna Nostbakken, and nieces, Kari Hudson and Angela Oliver.
Allan was born on the family farm near Crichton, SK. He attended school at Crichton and Cadillac. In 1957 he married Gerry Nostbakken and they began their married life in the teacherage at Pinto River School south of Aneroid. Allan taught school for 17 years in various areas of the province. During that time he also bought land at Aneroid and established their home there. In 1971 he was elected as a member of the Saskatchewan Legislature serving the Shaunavon constituency for a four year term. He was Reeve of the Municipality  of Auvergne #76 for over 30 years. During that time he also served on several provincial agricultural committees and Saskatchewan government boards. He particularly enjoyed the judicial work of the boards and took courses in legislative law to hone his ability as an arbitrator. He firmly believed in justice for all, civic duty and co-operation. He was on several local co-op boards, the Wheat Pool committee and supported Credit Unions. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, and earlier the Lutheran church at Admiral where he served as council chair for many years. He was part of the committee that worked to provide a new form of rural ministry by joining several local small congregations into what became the Southwest Lutheran Parish with St. Olaf Swift Current as the center, and four small outlying congregations becoming one parish. Although Allan had many off the farm jobs it was his love of the land that kept him centered. Although there were many challenges with farming over the years he experimented with new crops, practices and changed equipment that resulted in improving the quality of the land he cared for so much. He believed it was important to pass on the land in better condition than he received it. Allan was noted for his love of children as a teacher, parent, grandparent and uncle. He spent countless hours playing board games with the youngest niece and often had an audience of children listening in awe to his stories. He also seemed to be a magnet to dogs. Even returning American hunters said their dogs would become excited as they neared the Oliver farm. His sense of humour was well known and he loved telling jokes and playing good natured pranks. Allan loved his family and was so very proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He loved working with them and just being with them. His quiet presence will be missed by all.
