Agnes Kuhn

Agnes Kuhn, age 100 years, 9 months and 12 days, went to be with her Saviour, on October 18, 2018 at the Herbert and District Integrated Health Facility. Agnes, the eldest of 9 children, was born near Wymark, SK, on January 6, 1918 to George and Aganetha Dyck. When she was 4 years old, her family moved to Mexico.  After 11 months, they returned to Saskatchewan and lived near Saskatoon. They soon moved to Schoenwiese, near Wymark. Aunt Agnes attended English School at Versailles, one mile north of Chortitz and German School at Schoenfeld, SK. She had 2-3 years of education.  She loved going to school and wished she could continue. However, her help was needed at home. She often told stories of the adventures she and her brother George shared while going to school with horses, and how much George disliked school and wished he could be the one to stay home.  The family moved frequently.  Their last move was to McMahon, SK.  This is where Aunt Agnes met John Kuhn.  They were married on Sept.26, 1936, in Agnes' parents' home.  No guests were allowed to attend the wedding due to a cholera epidemic.  A policeman, in red serge, was stationed at her parents' driveway to stop all potential guests.  The newlyweds made their first home with Uncle Johnny's dad, at his farm.  The one room house was divided by a curtain, giving the newlyweds their own bedroom.  They continued to live and farm with Uncle Johnny's dad, south of McMahon for one year, and then rented a house 1 and a half miles away.  In 1942 they moved to Swift Current.  There Aunt Agnes opened their home to boarders, which included some of her brothers and other men who worked at the Horse Plant.  The men loved her pies.  She told of needing to hide the pies if she wanted to have any left to serve them at supper. Her brother, Johnny, loved her pies so much that he was willing to pay her $1.00 for his own apple pie so he could eat it all himself.  During this time, she also worked at the Elite Café and the Healy Hotel.  In 1948, Aunt Agnes and Uncle Johnny moved to Moose Jaw, where she worked at the Princess Café. It was during this time that Agnes' mother passed away, and her youngest brother, Jacob, affectionately called “Jakie” came to live with them.  In 1958, they bought and operated a service station and lunch counter in Pense, SK. They returned to Moose Jaw in 1961 where Aunt Agnes was a fulltime homemaker. They moved to Regina in 1973 and enjoyed many years of retirement there.  In the fall of 1996, before moving to a new condo in Swift Current, Aunt Agnes and Uncle Johnny spent a few months living in a small farmhouse near McMahon.  They experienced snow blizzards typical to that community.  Aunt Agnes referred to this time as "living in the snowbank"!  There Uncle Johnny helped her with the cooking and housekeeping. Aunt Agnes was always concerned about Uncle Johnny walking the mile to McMahon for their mail.  On May 17, 1999 Uncle Johnny, the love of her life, passed away.  They had been married for 62 years.  After Uncle Johnny's passing, Aunt Agnes moved to the Bentley in Swift Current and a few years later she moved to the Herbert Manor and more recently, the Herbert and District Integrated Health Facility. Aunt Agnes greatly enjoyed living in Herbert and felt at home there.  Her family deeply appreciates the care and concern given to her there.  
In her late teens, Aunt Agnes attended a tent revival meeting in the community and there she accepted the Lord as her own personal Saviour.
Aunt Agnes was a very hospitable person.  She was very creative and enjoyed cooking, gardening and doing crafts.  She had a great sense of humour and always had a twinkle in her eye.
Agnes is survived by one brother, John Dyck of Wetaskiwin, AB; one sister, Mary Dyck of Swift Current; two sisters-in-law, Elda Dyck and Irene Dyck both of Swift Current; and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Agnes was predeceased by her husband, Johnny Kuhn; parents, George and Aganetha Dyck; parents-in-law, Emil and Maria Kuhn; brothers, George, Peter, Diedrick and Jacob (Jakie); sisters, Tina Eaton and Justine Mouland; brothers-in-law, Red Eaton and Cecil Mouland; sisters-in-law, Ann Dyck and Marjorie Dyck.
The memorial service was held at 2:00 pm on October 23, 2018 at Bridgeway Community Church with Pastor Bob Cappelle officiating. Tributes were presented by Lois Knelsen and Delores McMartin.  The obituary was read by Cheryl Satre. The pianist was Edith Dyck. Song leader was John Redekop. Pallbearers were: Wilf Dyck, Arverd Dyck, Roger Satre, Darcy Wiebe, Myron Knelsen and Marvin Knelsen.  Honorary pallbearers:  All of the caregivers and staff of the Herbert Manor and Herbert and District Integrated Health Facility. The ushers were Gordon Knelsen and Curtis Martens. The interment took place at Memory Gardens cemetery.  Donations in memory of Agnes can be made to the Herbert and District Integrated Health Facility.
