Verne Selvig Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Verne Selvig, beloved husband, father, grandfather, who passed away February 20, 2019 at The Meadows in Swift Current. Verne was born April 16, 1920 at Shaunavon, SK, the fourth child born to Fred and Hilma Selvig, in a family of eight children (5 boys and 3 girls). They lived on the farm about 12 miles north of Shaunavon, where his Dad homesteaded in 1906. In the spring of 1941, Verne joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, which allowed him to further his education and upon receiving his wings, he was promoted to Pilot Officer. He was stationed in various parts of Canada before his discharge in 1945. With a loan from the Veteran's Land Act, he was able to purchase his first half section of land, giving him his start in farming. In 1951, he married Margaret Johnson from Leinan, SK, who had come to Shaunavon to teach school. They lived on their farm north of Shaunavon for over 50 years, where they raised their family of five, (4 boys and 1 girl). Verne supplemented the farm income by driving school bus for several years, plus driving the Co-op fuel truck hauling fuel from Regina to Shaunavon, Frontier and Eastend. Through the years, by being very frugal and taking advantage of better times, he was able to expand his farming operation until he retired at the age of 75. After selling the farm, Verne and Margaret moved to Swift Current, where Verne took up bowling and golfing without missing a beat. They enjoyed their lovely home on Reid Cres. for many years, eventually retiring to Riverview Village Estates. In June 2016 due to Alzheimer's, Verne was admitted to The Meadows where he has been a resident until his passing. Verne leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife of 67 years; his son Rick (Ali); his son Larry (Gudrun); his son David (Avi); his son Kevin (Kristy); his daughter Dianne (Gordon); thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. He also survived by his brother Vick Selvig of Bow Island, AB; his sister Grace Johnston of Edmonton, AB; his brother Norman (Betty) Selvig of Shaunavon; his brother-in-law Ray Johnson of Calgary, AB; his sister-in-law Doris Turner of Swift Current, SK; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Hilma Selvig; his brothers Roy and Eddie Selvig; his sisters Gladys Wilder and Vi Dever. A Memorial Service will be held at Riverview Estates at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at The Meadows for the kind and compassionate care Verne received while a patient there.
