Shirley Murchie Obituary

Shirley Joyce Murchie passed away peacefully at the Meadows in Swift Current on January 8th, 2019. The funeral service will be held Saturday January 19th at 2:00 pm at First United Church. Our mom was born on May 20th, 1931 in Moose Jaw, SK. She was the only child of Herman and Alice Wein and she spent her childhood on the family farm near Success. She attended Flats School and later graduated from SCCI in Swift Current before attending Normal School in Moose Jaw to become a teacher. Her teaching career began in the Stewart Valley area and eventually led her into Swift Current. After taking time off to be at home with us, mom returned to teaching and taught in the Prairie West School Division until her retirement in 1991. Mom married Ron Murchie on April 17th, 1954 and together they lived, farmed, worked and raised their family for fifty years. Their first child Donald was born January 3rd, 1963 followed by Rhonda on November 19th, 1965. Mom wore many hats as we were growing up. She was a cheerleader, coach, farmer, truck driver, taxi driver, card shark, teacher, Kinette, cleaner, baker, cook and volunteer. Once she returned to teaching, we all looked forward to our summer holidays spent at Cypress Hills. It truly was mom's happy place.  Mom's retirement from teaching closely coincided with the arrival of grandchildren. Mom loved being a grandma and Lindsay, Caitlin, Josh and Emily were her pride and joy. After her retirement, she was able to do some travelling and spent time in Vancouver with her Aunt Bertha and enjoyed fabulous trips to Europe and Disneyland. She also put on a few new hats in retirement and became a bowler, line dancer and golfer. Being able to spend even more time at Cypress added to the enjoyment of retirement. As mom's health began to decline, she was fortunate to have many caregivers at the Herbert Manor, the Pioneer Lodge, the Palliser and finally at the Meadows. We are so thankful for all the caring hands that provided her comfort in her final years. Mom was predeceased by her parents Alice and Herman Wein, her mother and father-in-law Donald and Maplet Murchie, her husband Ron, her sister-in-law Elaine, her nephew Jimmy, her grandson Mitchell and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her son Don, his wife Shellie and their children Caitlin and Emily; her daughter Rhonda, her husband Rod (Siemens) and their children Lindsay and Josh; her brother-in-law Doug and his wife Karen and Doug's children Kathryn and Sandra (Brett, Claire, Elizabeth) as well as numerous cousins. Mom was a beautiful, kind and gentle lady who loved us and supported us and was always so very proud of us. We love you mom and will miss you always.
