The interment service was held at Pennant Cemetery. Ruth is survived by her children David (Denise) Schmaltz, Rick (Lise) Schmaltz, Pam Benallack and Lori Schmaltz (Michael Evans-Smith); grandchildren Robin Schmigelsky, Tammy Schmaltz, Samantha Walker, Carson Benallack, Jessemy Barber, Kristopher Schmaltz, Genavieve Hjalte, Savannah Schultz, Teagan Schultz, Sayre Schultz, Noah Schmaltz and Alex Schmaltz; great grandchildren Kyler and Ryder Schmigelsky, Ty and Cody Walker, Cash and Hudsyn Benallack, and Madeleine Hjalte; sisters Helen Carlton and Gwen Surdu; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Alex and Gladys Haw; husband Jim Schmaltz; siblings Delbert Haw and Norma Armstrong; brother-in-law Len Surdu and various brothers and sisters of Jim's. Ruth was born in Cabri, SK on September 28, 1932 and she attended school in Pennant and the Convent in Swift Current. She was united in marriage to Jim Schmaltz on November 24, 1952 in Lemsford, SK. She was a self employed homemaker who also worked on the family farm. She was a member of the Pennant Ladies Curling, C.W.L., and was a member of the choir at church. Ruth enjoyed musical concerts and the performing arts, travel, reading, and going to church. She was a supporter of the Arts in Swift Current and the surrounding communities and an avid sports fan, especially the Roughriders and spent many hours watching her favorite curlers. Ruth was born into the farming life and continued her love of the land when she married Jim Schmaltz in 1952. Together they built up their farm and raised their family. Ruth's deep faith and love of family was the cornerstone of her life. She found beauty everywhere; animals, nature and children. Ruth was a private person but will be remembered as a gracious lady who was easily loved by anyone who met her. Her sense of style and the manner in which she carried herself never wavered. Ruth missed Jim so very much these last 15 years, we can only imagine the welcome home in heaven. Our hearts ache for our mom but we are so grateful that she was able to stay on the farm, where she wanted to be and passed gently with her family by her side. Thank you God for sharing her with us.
